Il Museo delle Arti in Ghisa nella MAremma

Museo e Rifugi Smi

🇬🇧 The Museum is located in Campo Tizzoro, on the mountains around Pistoia, and it was a part of the industrial SMI plants, the Italian Metallurgical Society, one of the most important Italian war industries of the twentieth century.
The factory was founded by the Orlando family from Palermo, already owner of some metalworking workshops.
The production consisted of cartridges and goods in copper, bronze or steel. The building also includes air-raid shelters made entirely by man (the only example in Italy). The Museum was opened on May 12, 2012 and consists of a path composed of thematic rooms about the history of Italian ammunition from 1860 to 2000, and the events related to the social achievements strongly desired by the Orlando family itself: the canteen, the kindergarten, the professional school, sports activities and farms.
The current rooms are seven: the Campo Tizzoro Plastic and the aid works Room, the Italian Ammunition Room and the Frizt Wenner scars, the Ammunition Check Room, the Presidency Room with eighteenth-century relics up to the twentieth century, the Cartography and Farms Room, the Chemist and Mercury Fulminate Room and the Air-raid Shelters.
The S.M.I Museum is a great example of industrial archeology. Through the ancient halls and shelters you can relive 360° the workers experiences and the feelings of a whole era.
